– Country radio disses Dixie Chicks – May 22, 2006

Is Country Radio dissing the Dixie Chicks or are the Dixie Chicks dissing Country Radio? I think it is pretty clear the the Dixie Chick had no concept of who their audience is when Natalie made the comments she did. Country Music is the last bastion in the music industry of pro-American values. While I don’t agree with the threats made against the Dixie Chicks, the abandonment of their music by Radio Stations and Listeners is the free market at work. The Dixie Chicks made a statement that basically said, if you don’t like us, don’t listen to us and they market responed with a resounding OK. This is a great example of being stuck on stupid. The Dixie Chicks most certainly are free to their own opinions, but so is their audience.

“Taking the Long Way,” due out May 23, is the band’s first album since singer Natalie Maines sparked a major controversy in 2003 by declaring that she was ashamed to hail from the same state as fellow Texan President George W. Bush. Radio boycotts ensued, and many fans abandoned the band.

Race Report: 6 Hours of Addison Oaks

I did it. Today I raced in the 6 Hours of Addison Oaks. This was my first endurance race and this was how I had decided to celebrate turning 40. I raced in the solo 40+ mens class. This race took place on the 3rd straight day of rain. The races was a lot like riding in Peanut Butter. The conditons got worse as the day went on. The mud collected every where on my bike. I after the first two laps, I was not able to shift out of my granny gear on the front. This made for a very slow go of it. The first two laps were reasonable, but the last 3 were just miserable. At the end of the 5th lap, I had enough time to go out for a sixth lap actually, I had close to an hour, but I just didn’t want to fight the mud anymore. So I went to my pit stop and waited for the end of the race announcement. Then I rode accross the finish line about 2 minutes after the announcement. This was good enough to earn 2nd place in my class. I was very happy with my performance and disappointed with the conditions. The race would have been very fun in good conditions.

You can see all the statistics collected by my GPS unit here.

How I am celebrating turning 40!

Well, now I have done it. I have signed up to race in the 6 Hours of Addison Oaks mountain bike race. I will be racing for as many laps I as I can in 6 hours. My goal is to complete 60 miles in the 6 hours. I am a little worried because my training has fallen of in the last few week, but I think I have enough base miles in that I should do OK. I have this race and a 40 mile Marathon race this season.

The race is a week from today (May 13th) and I am already a little nervous. I am on call this week so getting out and riding will be a little difficult, but I will do what I can today through Thursday. I still need to put together a checklist of everything I need to bring this week. The biggest challenge for me will be nutrition. Last year when I road in a 40 mile marathon race, I found that I did not eat enough and ended up having a rough time for the last 10 miles. For this race, I intend to consume a variety of easily digested food. Hopefully the laps will be short enough that I don’t need to carry food with me. Then I will just take short pit stops to each and get moving again.
