I have actually worked out everyday this week in some form.  I went to the gym on Monday and Wednesday where I ran and lifted weights.  Tuesday and Thursday, I rode on my trainer in my basement.  Hopefully I can make it to the Gym tomorrow and then a long ride on the trainer Saturday morning.  The last weigh-in was Wednesday at 248.

What I am really looking forward to is my family visiting me at work on Friday.  I know my daughter will love looking out my office window at Downtown Detroit.  Then it is off work for the holidays.


The Week of Excuses

Let’s see, Saturday I worked from 3:45 am to 10:30 pm.  Sunday I needed to rest from Friday.  Monday I started on-call duty.  Tuesday I was up late with an issue from Monday.  Wednesday I had stayed up late because I was goofing around Tuesday night.  So I decided I needed to get back to working out because I had done nothing since Friday.  I decided to do a cardio workout because I could do that and not leave the house.  I rode to my CTS Mountain Bike Racing Training Video.  According to my Garmin Edge 305,  I rode 14.9 miles (in my basement) in 52:30 for an average speed of 17 mph.  I burned 1320 calories.  My average heart rate was 146 and my maximum heart rate was 168.  My average cadence was 82 rpms.  It felt good to get moving again.  It is already late tonight, so I probably won’t make it to the gym tomorrow.  Maybe another ride tomorrow night.

Five days in a row.  I have made it all the way to Friday and have worked out all 5 days.  WooHoo!  Today I ran on the Treadmill for 5 minutes at 6.5 mph.  I also did a 32 minute Lower Body strength training workout.  I feel good except that I weighed in at 250 pounds today. 

The real test is when I start working tomorrow at 3:45 am and I am scheduled until at least 4:00 pm.  Fortunately I will be working from home, but the workout I have planned for tomorrow is a 90 minute easy ride on the trainer.  I am hoping to sneak that in between 4:30 and 6:00 during which time I will not be needed for work.

This is the farthest I have made it into the week with consecutive workouts in over 2 months.  This morning I rode on my trainer to the CTS Mountain Bike Racing video.  It is a good workout but it is also a sign of how far I have fallen off even in the last couple of months.  I used to be able to ride it with the resistance set higher and at a higher heart rate.  Now I feel like I am going to collapse when I finish.

Now is the time of looking forward.  Santa is sending my present early this year.  I am getting a set of lights, the Blackburn System X6.  The point of these lights is to enable me to ride in 12 hour endurance races.  I am hoping to keep my training up and actually be prepared to ride a 12 hour race.  I do need to sit down and work through what races I am planning on competing in.  I will probably should be smarter than to race a 6 hour endurance race on Saturday, an 18 mile XC race the following Saturday and a 13 mile time trial on Sunday.  Three races in 8 days was quite fun, but probably not too good for me.

I made it to the Gym today for 5 minutes of running on the treadmill with a 3 minute cool down and an upper body strength training workout.  I feel pretty good and I feel like I did something right because it kind of hurts to type :-).

For the numbers geeks,  I covered 0.7 miles in 8 minutes with an average heart rate of 138 and a maximum heart rate of 153.  I weighed in today at 248 pounds.

I started riding on my trainer at 4:10 am using the CTS Mountain Bike Racing Video as my workout.  According to my Cyclocomputer here are the stats for my ride:

Avg HR: 136 bpm
Avg Cadence: 87 rpm
Calories: 1196 cal

I feel pretty good and managed to leave for work at 5:35.  There will be no weigh-in today because I worked out at home instead of the Gym.

Well I made it to the gym today and and actually managed to run for 5 minutes (which is a lot when you haven’t run for years) and did a lower body workout.  I weighed in at 249 today which is significantly more than the 230 I was at this time last year, but still 30 pounds under where I was 3 years ago.  Next step is to get some base miles in.  The plan for that is to ride for about an hour after my daughter goes to bed.  I then have to get myself ready for work tomorrow which starts at 6:30.  The plan is to get out of bed at 3:45 and ride on the trainer to the CTS Mountain Bike Racing training video.  I should then be able to shower and leave for work by 5:30.

The Will to Start

Today is a vacation day from work.  My wife is doing a big Christmas shopping outing with her friend, so I will be taking my daughter to school and then heading to the gym to work out.  I have my gym bag packed and ready to go.  The alarm clocks have started going off and the rest of my family will be up soon.

I have to goals and they would seem to complement each other, but they do not necessarily work together.  Losing weight and competing in endurance events would seem to go hand in hand.  The problem is, that in order to perform in an endurance event, the body has do have fuel but that fuel does not necessarily encourage weight loss.

We will see how this works.

Starting over again

Well here I sit on the eve of starting my training program over again.  2006 has not been the best year for me.  I did have a number of firsts in 2006, some good and some bad.  I had my first DNF in a mountain bike race when I endoed over some logs and tacoed my wheel.  I completed my first endurance race (6 hours of Addison Oaks) in some of the worst conditions I could have imagined.

However, as I sit here in the first week of December, I have gained 20 pounds since January and am is much worse shape than I started the year.  Tomorrow I have the day off from work and I am going to start training for next year.  My goals for next season are very simple.  I want to finish a 12 hour endurance race and I want to at least lose the 20 pounds I put on this year.

This blog will be my training diary.  Tomorrow the plan is Weight Training focused on the lower body.  I will also be adding some form of cardio although I have not decided what that cardio will be.  I think my weight days (M,W,F) will be short runs on the treadmill and hopefully a longer (60 to 90 minutes on my Trainer).  Tuesdays and Thursdays will be Interval Training on the trainer.
